Magazine Review Research

Above is an example of a film review from the independent magazine 'Time Out'. Here you see a short review, straight to the point with all the information you need; director, author, actors names and rating. At the top you see the title of the film in bold & the year it was released, this is to make sure people see it when flicking through the magazine, as the article is short and some may skip it by accident. The reason for the article being short instead of a double page spread is to ensure the reader doesn't get bored, as most would prefer to read a small amount of text than a huge spread all talking about the same stuff. This is likely to result in more people actually reading the review instead of skipping it, leading to more coverage for the film and director. As well as this, people may be more likely to buy the magazine again. After the name of the film, the directors name is present to allow the audience to look further into their work if they liked the film, also in case the audience didn't know that specific person directed the film, say if they are a fan and so the film may get more views.

Story Analysis 1

Story Analysis 1

After discussing our story ideas in our groups we then talked about the issues with each story taking into account issues that might affect the making of the film, the four main categories that we judged each idea on were practicalities, logical causality, thematic unity and character development.

We first focused on the practicalities of each idea, these are the issues that might affect the making of the idea into a film.
The first of the story ideas that we looked at was JoJors, in terms of practicalities we decided that the location would be an issue, the difficulties being that the story relies on the main character visiting his parents in the country. This would have meant having to find a suitable location for the story such as a village. Shooting in a location like this would also be difficult as we would have to take into account gaining permission to shoot in our desired locations with the cameras and also perhaps having to have an adult accompanying us.
When looking at my idea we noticed an issue with casting, it is essential to the plot that the main character, Aiden, is able to put contact lenses on. Therefore it is important that we cast an actor who can apply contacts to his eyes. This can be a major issue with the limited casting options that we have. Also, similar to Jojor's idea, there is also an issue of having to acquire permission to shoot in certain locations.
We then looked at Deni's idea to discuss practicalities and we  a few issues, the first issue is finding a red blob to use as a prop, this can be difficult as it is not a typical item and would have to be either especially made or even removed from the story. Another problem is the use of dogs in the story, this could be a problem for us as it is hard to shoot consistent shots and could prolong the shooting process, we may also have to train the dogs which would be even more time consuming.

Logical causality is the idea that everything that happens occurs in a logical manner and is not unexplained and without a clear motive. When looking at logical causality we agreed that a scene in JoJors wasn't explained and did not make sense, in this scene a car goes past the main protagonists car and is described to be wearing dark clothing with a sinister demeanor upon discussion we concluded that this scene was not clear as it does not explain in the short where the car is going and the reasoning behind the characters presence in conjunction with the story.
For my idea, we determined that the only lack of logical causality is the fact that the main character randomly finds out about the article on the contact lenses, we felt that this important plot point should be explained in more detail and in a logical way, one idea we came up with in order to rectify this was to change the story so that the main character is in university as a student and comes across the research on the contact lenses when visiting the campus laboratories.
Similarly in Deni's idea we saw the same problem, in this story the red plot plays a pivotal part of the story but is not explained and does not make logical sense as well, however this idea of a red blob makes the story more quirky and weird.

Thematic unity is the idea that the activities that happen in the short all center around one theme.
For JoJor's idea we discussed the different themes that can be associated with the short and decided that there are many different underlying themes such as loss, emotion and darkness, however, there is no one clear and direct theme for the idea. This can be a problem as it can confuse the audience if there is no clear direction of the film, this can also be troubling for the makers of the film, because the theme is not straightforward it can make it harder to create an effective and quality film without a clear direction, this could mean that the emotions conveyed with the theme are not captured on film.
For both my idea and Deni's story idea we all agreed that they both had one clear theme of greed with many different underlying themes that are associated with red such as passion, anger and willpower, we felt that this would be the most effective as with a clear theme it is easy to create a short around those ideas as well as adding other themes into the story as well increasing its depth.

Character development is important in that it allows the audience to emotionally connect with the story and characters, character development can be the driving force in a story and without it it can leave the viewer feeling unsatisfied with the ending.
One of the main issues with JoJors idea is the lack of a clear change in the main character, we do not clearly see his development from the beginning of the story to the end and so it can make it difficult for the viewer to enjoy the film as much. The main character also lacks a distinctive motive at the end of the story reducing the effectiveness of the character to connect with the audience.
In contrast, in both my idea and Deni's idea there was excellent character development, both main characters change due to greed and at the end of the short there is a clear difference between the characters at the beginning and the end, we felt that Deni's idea had the best character development as we also see the changes in other important characters such as the old man and best friend.
This story analysis task has helped us to identify all the issues in each story idea and improves our hindsight to similar issues when creating other story ideas, it also allows us to understand what we need to do in order to perfect our story ideas.
