EVALUATION QUESTION 2 NOTES
The poster and review both use navy blue writing, this is done to resemble the colour of the ink in a pen and so ties in with the title of our film. However, the poster portrays the film as a parody, which does not come across funny in the review and so is better to present visually, we decided to go for a Johnny English theme and make the poster look serious about something unexpected (pens) which adds to the comedy element. This helps to market the film as it tells the audience it will be funny and silly and so the audience would know what to expect and so the poster is used to draw those who enjoy comedies in to watch the short. As the poster is used to highlight the comedy and quirkiness within the film, the review shows the more professional side to the film, also to link the film and poster together we used s quote from the review and put it on the poster. The review is aimed more at people who like to be up to date on upcoming films and base whether or not they watch a film on the review, and so this targets an older audience than the poster as the review is for possibly teenagers/young adults who would find it interesting compared to the poster which is more visual and so could apply to all age groups mainly 8+. The poster is made to look more fun which is why we have a variety of black white red and blue and also the protagonist not looking scary even though he is the bad one in the film. This is done so that it still looks welcoming and people don't mistake the film for being scary. We added the pen behind his ear for effect to help emphasise that the film is based on this idea of pens which would intrigue the audience as something like this has not been done before and so adds to the quirkiness of the film, also the fact that it's about something different makes that it's unique selling point. To match the film itself we merged both of the title sequence backgrounds so it relates to what you see in the film and the audience is familiar with it, this also gives it a James Bond look, however the falling pens contrast and leads to you not taking it too seriously. We also got our actor to wear the same clothes as he wore in the film so this is something else the audience will feel familiar with, this is done because they would not be familiar with the pen element and so we do not want them to feel completely confused so the little familiarities may make them feel like they are part of the film and not completely new to it.

FILM POSTER ANALYSIS
The main colours used in this poster are; blue and green, these colours are unisex and so this tells you the film is aimed at both male and female audiences. Blue is said to resemble intelligence, hence Matilda (the main character in the film) being very smart and overcoming the adults who are against her. The colour blue also connotes authority, as shown by the variety of adults on the poster, foreshadowing a possible uprising against the adults. Green represents youth and harmony. This tells you the film will probably have a happy ending overall. As well as this, the girl looks happy and it can be suggested the film is quite cheeky and fun. The symbols used in the poster are; a globe and books which are represented photographically, this suggests this could be based in a school, and is based on knowledge, or wanting to be smart. These symbols are easy to understand and child friendly. Again, this poster is very visual, however there is a lot more going on, this is to fascinate the audience and give them lot's to look at and keep them interested. Also children like to look at things and ask their parents what something is and why its there and so they would be educated by them, however children are also very imaginative and so are open to interpretation and can imagine what they wish. It gives them the opportunity to be open minded and put their own story together, making them want to go and see the film. As well as this, the film is also a children's book so many children and adults would have some knowledge of the film anyway, also the author Roald Dahl is very popular with children and in schools so people going to watch the film is guaranteed. The messages in the poster are primarily visual however there is some text, "somewhere inside all of us is the power to change the world". This message gives children hope and delivers a nice message to the audience teaching children that even they can make a difference and do something if they believe in it, making adults more likely to take their children to see it. Also this relates to the globe in the top right corner, this tells us this is a big part of the film, that the film is about a young girl who makes a difference for the good. As the poster is fun and based on a children's book it is obvious that it is aimed at children and families as many parents would have read the children this book themselves. The persuasive techniques used here are making the poster relate to the audience as much as possible as all children are surrounded by adults and go to school, as well as this it has high artistic value and many children who enjoyed the book and/or film would purchase the poster to keep in their bedroom, especially Roald Dahl fans. You may also find it in schools and libraries in DVD sections alongside the books. As this poster has an inspirational quote, parents may want to let their children see it to inspire them and teach them lessons, or just to have a bit of fun with the family, it's the perfect film. Also, actors names such as Danny DeVito are used to spark an interest in adults who may already be familiar with them and so know the film would be good if it starred certain people. Matilda has many genres; children's literature, humour and fantasy. the humour is shown through the child having one over on the adults and defeating them and their juvenile ways, this is portrayed in the poster by the girl being the larger dominant figure and in the center of the poster, smirking showing she is the main character and the happy/smug look tells us that she 'wins'. No critics are used as children wouldn't understand the purpose of them and be much more interested in the visual representation of the poster than the actual words. Also having read the book, many people would know how it ends or be able to express their opinion to those who haven't already. As well as this, children could be encouraged to read more and so might borrow the book to fit in with everyone else talking about it. Having a child be the main attraction on the poster would get the children's attention as they know they would relate to it and possibly enjoy the film, for example there are children on cbeebies etc so they would have an idea of what kind of fun stuff would happen in the film.
The poster tells us that the film may be based in a real life scenarios and real life settings e.g school, with real adults and school life for example classes. There is no sign of animations or another world and so this film is maybe for children older than 6, who can read. The poster gives you a lot of information about what to expect so that the children are not surprised and it doesn't deceive them, it gives them the opportunity to make up their own ideas and stays child friendly. This poster is likely to be placed in schools and children's libraries as previously stated, also in cinemas and maybe buses so when children are mobile with their parents they can see them.
I believe this poster may be very effective for children as it would stand out to them among others in many ways. It has all the right elements to show that its unisex and for children to enjoy as well as the whole family. Its message is very clear through the use of imagery with the help of little text and so is not hard to understand. Its not scary or too baby-ish and so is perfect at targeting its age group. I think the poster is straight forward and there are no mixed messages from it, also it is not offensive in anyway.
FILM POSTER ANALYSIS
The main colours used in this poster, are blue, which adds an element of mystery, and grey, also gloomy and mysterious, from this we learn that there could be a darkness in this film, hence the dominating male figure on the left hand side in dark clothing. The suitcase in this poster suggests some type of escape or chase, possibly money many characters in films keep money in suitcases. The children running away from the adult in the opposite direction, also suggests a chase and that they are a team as suggested by their body language of holding hands. The adults arms wrapping around the frame suggests that he is trying to catch the children but can not seem to as they keep running away from him. This poster is quite easy to read, this is because it is aimed at young teens. Children are the main characters, this is shown by the children being in the middle of the poster. The poster is quite simple and so young teens would be to be attracted to it, and it's not too difficult for them to decode. It is mainly aimed at ages 12+ as the film was actually originally a book. As well as this, the poster doesn't have colours like red green and yellow which would attract ages 8 and below, and so the film is for a slightly more complex audience, but not too hard to understand for a younger audience. The background of the poster looks like the ocean and the sky, this could be used to foreshadow the journey the children take escaping the evil adult trying to capture them, and the different places they end up. The adult being so large and the children so small represents some kind of authority or power over the children and the children being quite vulnerable, it can also be suggested that they are on their own as there is no nicer looking adult present to try and protect them. The messages in this poster are primarily visual, this is so that it doesn't deter young teens from it, it doesn't bore them and keeps them interested in the poster. Despite the film being based on a book, those too young to read it, or those who do not have an interest in reading would still be interested in the poster due to the lack of words. The poster is not just used to promote the film, is also has an artistic value, hence why it's not just a plain poster, this is because fans like to buy them and hang them up on their walls. The writing "We're very concerned" makes the audience feel like part of the film, the use of "we're" invites the audience into the film as well as adding a sense of escapism. Plus it compliments the eerie background adding to the mystery, intriguing the audience Also this is not too serious and worrying to the audience, its almost as if you read it in a funny voice in your head, adding a comedy element to the film. The "coming soon" piques the audiences interest as well as adding a sense of anticipation, making them excited for the release of the film. Also as the film poster doesn't blatantly give much away it could lead to the audience doing further research and so finding the book, leading to them reading it and becoming more interested in the release of the film. As well as this as the film posters mystery may lead to people asking others if they have seen it and trying to find out what its about, and so more publicity. The genres of this poster are; comedy, family, fantasy and adventure. The comedy is shown by the comical look on the large mans face, suggesting a cheeky smirk but not too evil to be a horror or threatening to the audience, it's unwelcoming and mischievous but not scary enough to put of young teens and below, as well as this the colours are not too dark for example black and so its not off putting. The adventure could be represented through the use of the sky and ocean meeting in the background suggesting that while the children are running away they go on an adventure and have a quest or mission to complete themselves. This adds on to the fantasy element, this is also suggested by the strange clothes the children are wearing, this isn't what children of today would normally wear and so suggests an alternative time period or even world that the children live in, a different way of life or parallel universe, also adding to the sense of escapism it aims to give the audience. The family element is an overall result of all of the genres put together, the comedy of the adults vs. children make it fun for the family to watch all together as they could relate to it, as well as this the film not being scary makes it family friendly, plus the fantasy and adventure keeps both adults and children interested as its suitable for both ages, and parents would like to watch films with their children. It has the right balance of all genres to make it fun for everyone to enjoy. A very well known A list celebrity actor isn't used as a unique selling point for the film, so its possibly more difficult to get viewers, however it can be argued that as the film was originally a book, it would already have a fan base so its not crucial. No critics are used in this specific poster, I believe this is because teens tend to pay less attention to this and also more wording on the poster may put the audience off. There is already text on the poster so more is not necessary, also this adds to the mystery element of the film as nothing is given away.
Due to the man being enlarged making the children look very small, and also the edited sky meets ocean background, it can be guessed that this film may have a lot of animation in it, especially to the scenery, adding to the fantasy and adventure genre. This puts it at the top of childrens/young teens films as it fits all the codes and conventions, other films like this may be Harry Potter, as Hogwarts is animated. This film poster would have been found on buses and at bus stops, also in cinemas to encourage people to go back again and watch another film. This poster would have been one of the first film posters released as hardly any information is shown, no date or actors, in order to create a build up to the film and keep the audience on the edge of their seats waiting to find out more information. As many young people use the bus to get to school and because it's free for them, they are more likely to see it on buses and bus stops so it targets the audience very well, also putting it in actual cinemas would encourage regular cinema users to go back, giving them an idea of whats coming next and to tell their friends about it, as childrens tickets are cheaper than adults, its likely they would return or tell their parents about it.
I believe this poster is effective as I would be intrigued by it, the mystery element could make young teens feel like they're watching an 'older' film. Also it tells you a lot without actually giving much away, and so you're left in suspense wanting to know more. I think it communicates with the audience very well it manages to show all its genres without any text and is very visual making it perfect for its target audience, its more of a mature young teen film but also fun for the family which I think is clearly shown by the images and colours used. The poster could be seen as offensive to old men with beards as the man is portrayed as scary, this could lead to a bad reputation or fear in younger children who do not understand, however this is just a stereotype. Also, this adds to the character of the man and so going against these characteristics would not have the same effect.

COLD (Award-Winning Short Film)
In this film the credits are quite fast and small due to the fast cuts and pace of the music, this is done to match these aspects as they all relate to each other. However in my film 'Ink' I wont be doing the credits this fast as the beginning of our film starts off quite slow and gradually speeds up, easing the audience into the action.

Treatment Draft 3 (OLD NOT USED)
FEEDBACK:
Courtney: Are you going to be filming the whole film in one place?
Owen: Its good that you can keep it simple in one place to avoid practical issues.
Esther: Realistically can you use the heads office?
Tyra: I like how you can tell the theme is greed as its consistent throughout the treatment
Miss: The story is quite long, maybe it could be better if you shortened the ending because otherwise it gets a bit too deep for the film, baring in mind you've only got 5 minutes and spending lot's of time on the ending might make it boring. It's too heavy for a quick film, and should end when Ed gets taken away. You need to tie the ending up nicely, this is as important as the plot twist in the middle, you need to do it really well. One idea could be Mr Cross' next victim coming into a room and asking to borrow a pen so that the end matches the beginning.
Miss: Why does Mr Cross want pens? Where is the motivation?
Owen: Who is Mr Cross?
Miss: You should use police detective like language to bring the comedic factors
Miss: Add a shot in Mr Cross' secret room where there are pencil cases full of pens with names on them then add another shot of Mr Cross placing Ed's pencil case with the others at the end. This will help to round up the story and give it a better and more satisfying ending.
Realizing that he has been caught, Ed begins to panic and worry. As he is close to arriving at the Head teachers office, he can see in the distance Mr Cross standing at the door in a stern manner, however as he approaches he can see that Mr Cross is smiling, he then says "So ... you like pens, eh?".
At the end we see Mr Cross in the secret room placing a pencil case full of pens, with Ed's name on it, next to the other pencil cases. He then leaves the room and goes to stand outside the Headmasters office, a young boy then approaches him, smiling like before, he says to the young boy, "So ... you like pens, eh?" whilst inviting him into his secret room.

Story Analysis 2
STORY 1 - JOJOR
STORY 2 - ME
STORY 3 - MICHAEL
One of the problems with Story 1, is that there is no character development as there is no clear change in the character in the beginning compared to the end and so it's harder for the audience to become interested in the short film, there is no actual meaning behind it & resolution to the story, because of this it does not make sense. This can lead to the audience being confused and dissatisfied with the short, however, Story 2 does have character development whereby the main character Charlotte, learns a lesson about greed and so becomes a better person, this story is better as it teaches the audience and adds depth to the story. This also keeps the readers interested and gives them more chance of remembering the story in the future. As well as seeing a clear change in the character at the end of the story, there is also changes between other characters who are affected by Charlottes growth throughout the story. Story 3 also has some character development, also leading to the character learning not to be greedy and to be appreciative of what they have (being colour blind as opposed to being completely blind). This characters emotions play a huge role as he goes from being miserable at the beginning to even worse at the end of the story, feeling resentment and regret. This teaches people to be grateful for what they have as there is always someone worse off than you. This led to a group decision of Story 2 being better in terms of character development.
Some practical issues with Story 1 are that we would need to find a larger cast than we have available, and also someone who can drive which may be difficult as we are only 17. Also we would need to find a parent willing to play a role which may be difficult as they are often too busy to take a large amount of time out of their day for 2 or more days. This would make it difficult for us to produce the film and so we would have to make adjustments. Story 2 requires us to either use CGI or make our own 'red blob' meaning we would need very good ICT skills or to find someone who is very creative, if not done properly our film would not be taken seriously as the blob would not look real and so this is a major issue as we can't just purchase one. Also being able to see the future in the blob would be extremely difficult and possible too advanced for our technical skills. As well as this, we would also need to find 4 dogs and control them when and when we are not filming which would cause a huge distraction and could result in our film not being of a high standard. Not only this but the dogs need to be trained, which we do not have the time to do. Plus, Story 2 requires a large cast of many different clients which may be difficult to find over such short notice with little time to film, and not all of them may be able to take part in the filming. Lastly, Story 3 requires us to find someone who is able to put contact lenses in and be comfortable with putting them in on camera, this would also mean the actor would have to be the main character. Also, as we want to show nice sights for example London, we would need permission to film in areas so far away as the cameras are not ours.

In Story 1, one logical casualty is that there is a car meant to be driving past the main character with 2 hooded figures in it, however, there is no explanation as to why the car is there, where it's going or where it came from and who the people are inside the car. This leads to confusion as the mystery still isn't resolved by the end of the story, making it irrelevant. In Story 3, one logical causality that we thought of was how this student suddenly stumbled upon the contact lenses out of all the people in the world, even though this is the foundation of our story. In Story 2 the 'blob' gives a fantasy theme and this is a logical causality as this doesn't happen everyday, and it not someone you would just expect to happen to you whilst walking in the park, but node again this is the foundation of the story and so it can be dismissed.

Article Researh
The story I have chosen is 'Mysterious Red Blob Washes Up On An Australian Beach'
Pitch: A young dog-walker becomes panicked when one of her dogs runs away and discovers a glowing red 'blob' which allows her to see the future. She wraps up the blob and takes it home. Only to find no one else can see it other than herself. She is a chosen one and finds her purpose is to help people for the greater good. However, she later becomes greedy and uses her discovery for her own benefit, resulting in a tragedy.
Tagline: Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed
Treatment:
Whilst walking 4 dogs, Charlotte starts to daydream about having special powers after watching a film called Superman the night before. While she is daydreaming she forgets about one particularly naughty dog named Red, who frees himself from his collar and runs off frequently. She is distracted when she hears her dog start to bark and notices he has gone missing. Panicking, she runs towards the sound of her dogs bark thinking the worst, talking to herself saying how his owner, an nice old man named Peter who adores Red will be devastated if she doesn't find him. Peter is always nice to Charlotte, he is unable to walk Red himself because of his age but is extremely grateful, so Charlotte doesn't charge him.
Finally, she finds Red in a ditch and calls him to get him to run back, but he doesn't move, he is distracted, barking at something she can not see. Tying the other 3 dogs to a tree, she struggles as she makes her way down the slope to grab him, when all of a sudden she too is distracted, by a red glow. Cautiously she walks towards the beam of light to see what it is, only to find a glowing gooey substance, thicker than jelly on the dirt. Red is still barking in the distance, threatened by it. While she tilts her head and moves closer to get a better look, she see's her reflection in the blob, she instantly feels obliged to take it home for further inspection. Wrapping the blob up in her white coat, she picks the rather heavy object up and covers it in order to avoid anyone seeing it.
When she gets home to places the now tainted jacket on her table and opens it, she pokes at it and pulls it but it does not break, just wobbles slightly. She puts 2 slices of bread in her toaster when it starts to glow again, she turns around and moves closer, to find a moving image appear. Fascinated, she watches as she see's a little boy on her street named Joey riding his bike and cross the road, and a car pull out of nowhere which hits him. Horrified she runs outside to see if he is okay, but there is no accident, she sighs of relief. everything is normal. She is just about to go back inside, when suddenly she hears Joey's bike bell ding, as he goes to cross the road, she shouts,
'JOEY WAIT!'
He stops and a car comes speeding down the road. Shocked, she stands there for a moment as Joey shouts thank you as he continues to cross the road. She sees another red glow appear from her house and runs in, looks at the blob once more to see her toast burning. Quickly she pops it up and finds it had just started to burn. She looks at the blob again and watched the glow die out.
The next day while walking the dogs, she walks into a book store to find out more about unidentified objects, when she see's a poster on the window advertising a reading from a psychic. Grinning, she leaves the book store, takes the dogs home early, shocking the owners who are not very happy, especially Peter who feels bad that Red isn't getting his daily walks, and goes home.
She calls a close friend named Amy and invites her over for a chat, however she has a motive, she asks Amy what her plans are on Friday, by which Amy replies with telling her about her plans to go out clubbing. Dismissing herself, Charlotte runs upstairs and asks the blob,
'What will Amy be doing on Friday?'
By which the blob responds by showing Amy arguing with her boyfriend Jack and staying in upset, overwhelmed, Charlotte informs Amy she doesn't think Jack would be too happy about her plans.
She waits until Friday, watching the clock when she receives a phone call from Amy who is sad about an argument she has had with Jack, asking Charlotte to come and keep her company. Charlotte lies and says she feels ill to Amy, leaving her friend alone and in need. This shocks Amy as its unlike her friend, but leaves it anyway.
Charlotte goes straight to her laptop and orders some business cards online from a sight with a red logo, with the slogan "success is nothing unless you have someone to share it with". On the cards she writes '100% Accurate or your money back readings for everyone from 16+ Monday to Friday, appointment only' and puts in an order for 500 cards, next day delivery.
As the days go on she distributes her cards and receives numerous phone calls on her red answer machine looking for people to book appointments, but she deletes the ones from her friends who are saying it's difficult to get hold of her and that they miss her. After some thought she decides to charge £150 an hour for readings and becomes obsessed with the blob.
One day she tries to get a reading for her last client of the day, a young man in a red t shirt, but the blob doesn't work. In a panic she lies to the man telling him he will be rich and successful and has nothing to worry about. After a long day she proceeds to look at the blob incase there is anything wrong. The blob starts to glow, only this time it's showing her own future, she's sitting in a room upset about something and calls her friends for help, but no one answers her, she looks sad, lonely and tired. When she gets a phone call back she answers instantly, only to find it's another client, telling her she's amazing and wanting to book another appointment.
Charlotte dismisses the blobs warning and continues her business, until one day her news paper comes and she see's an add for Peter Jones, about a funeral on Saturday for all the locals who may have known him. Her eyes instantly fill with tears and she picks up the phone to call Amy, she can't believe he's gone. In need of company she calls a few more of her friends who again do not answer, but she goes on Facebook to see they're all out together without her. Angry, her face turns red and she cries even more. She looks at the blob in disgust, which loses it's redness. A client calls and she knows what they're going to say, she declines the call and throws the blob at the wall, the blob was right.
Charlotte loses her friends as she has become blinded by greed and money, she looks at the pink £50 notes on her desk and regrets everything she has done, she picks up the phone, calls her dog walking clients and asks for her old job back, binning the business cards and picking up the red leads.

SHORT FILM QnA
Q n A with Yoshi
What's your ultimate dream?
Well, my ultimate dream is to be wealthy and happy, the wealthiest man in Hong Kong, never having to work for anyone and drive that big van around again, my wife never having to cook anymore because we would have personal chefs and cleaners and my children having private education, but seeing as it's too late for that to happen now, I'd have to go with owning a large removal company that does work over seas. Moving people all day gets really boring sometimes, it would be nice to see the rest of the world while I work you know?
What's your favourite food?
Definitely sushi, its a delicacy! My wife makes the best sushi, I just don't know how she does it, my mum gets jealous sometimes and is always competing with her!
What's your most embarrassing memory?
That would have to be explaining to my friends out of work why my team and I were moving imaginary things for a crazy man. One of them, Ying, said he saw us and thought we were putting on a show! Miming! How embarrassing...
Are you married?
Yes I am, I have a beautiful wife named Toyi, she is my best friend and very supportive. We also have 2 children, Tang and Lam, twin boys who are 7, they are so energetic, they keep me young.
What's your favourite colour?
I like orange, that's my favourite fruit but it also reminds me of the sun, I hate the cold, trying to carry heavy boxes with stiff fingers is never fun.
Are you a summer or winter person?
Well, even though working in the summer makes me all sweaty and horrible, I much prefer the sun to winter, I hate being cold and having to wear lots of layers.
Do you have any regrets?
I don't believe in regrets, although I do wish I listened more while I was in school, I could be rich now! Hence why I'd like my children to be put into private education. I don't want them taking on this family business when they have so much potential.
What's your favourite genre of music?
I love mainstream music, it's all I really get to listen to in the van on the radio, I like hip hop and pop music, my favourite artist is Rihanna, my wife is always listening to her around the house so I know all the words to her songs, they're pretty catchy!
What is your most valued life lesson?
Money can not buy happiness, I mean I would love to be rich, who wouldn't? But I do believe if I were rich and successful without my family and friends I would be unhappy. Earning money with my friends is something I'm happy I get to do, and buy my wife nice little gifts here and there.
Describe yourself in three words.
Well, helpful of course, I help people for a living carrying their belongings, erm, also I am ambitious, I would like to do something more than just move people for a living, and finally my wife says I'm untidy, she is always complaining about how untidy my van is and that if I want to be taken seriously I need to tidy it.
RESEARCH INTO EXISTING FILMS - Beat The Devil (BMW Short Film)
The lighting throughout this clip is low key, this is because it is an action thriller and low key lighting is a code and convention of this genre. It gives a gloomy atmosphere to the film making the audience feel uneasy and in danger while they're watching it. As well as this the use of dark colours such as red and black refer to the title as they resemble hell and the devil, this tells us dangerous things are coming and that we should be scared for the characters. Obviously the low key lighting symbolises darkness and foreshadows upcoming events in the film. There are many different shots all edited together quickly in order to coincide with the soundtrack at the beginning of the clip, this is done to create adrenalin and keep us entertained. Also to tell us lot's of things will be happening at once and set the pace of the film. The main colour in this film is orange, the fiery explosions and the sand as well as one of the men's suits is orange. Close to red it also resembles danger and the fire represents heat, this also matches with the idea of being in hell with the devil.

RESEARCH INTO EXISTING FILMS - Goodbye
The use of black and white throughout the clip creates an unhappy atmosphere, because of this you feel quite depressed watching it and feel sorry for the main character. The character used is a young girl who gets dressed, my interpretation of this is that she is unhappy with the way she looks and feels trapped but wants to escape herself. I think this is a good story line as many girls nowadays are body conscious and can relate to this film, it enables us to see the effect society has on young girls, and the use of black and white has a powerful effect as it resembles a loss of innocence and childhood. I feel as though the use of black in her dress is done to make her seem as though she has no happiness inside of her, and also feels dissatisfied with the way she looks. The camera reverses the sequence every time she tries to go outside, this is done to symbolise her inner fear of being judged by people and society itself, I think this tells us that she feels uncomfortable and can not bring herself to be confident in herself. Also, it represents her as being trapped and wanting to escape but always being held back by something much stronger than her, this is very effective as it shows the impact society and the media have on young girls nowadays. I think the black and white emphasises emptiness and how the girls world is full of sadness. The same shots are repeated throughout the clip to resemble the girls every day routine of being sad and judged by society. It's a cycle. There are numerous close up shots of the character crying and having a sad and stressed facial expression. This allows the audience to sympathise with the girl. Also she is alone in the big house which represents her feeling lonely inside. The curtains represent her hiding herself and her image and the doors represent her desiring freedom. The piano is slow throughout the clip, but speeds up the pace in the middle which is the climax and then slows down again. This is done to mirror her emotions and adrenalin as she tries to leave the house but gives in representing the routine she is stuck in. The girls body in the black dress looks like a silhouette and a violin, which stereotypically makes you feel sad and in touch with the music/girls feelings.
TASK 1 - SHORT FILM APPRECIATION
The short I chose is based on the theme of love, called Marisa by Nacho Vigalondo. The short is about a couple's everyday life and follows them throughout their relationship with the boyfriend/husband doing a VoiceOver for us. His girlfriend is diagnosed with a mental disorder whereby her personality changes depending on where she stands. As their relationship continues this gradually gets worse and worse & so she changes after every individual step she takes, compared to before when it changed depending on the room she was in. Eventually the boyfriend finds his girlfriends real personality in one specific place; a park on the swings, however when he tried to move closer to the area in order to keep her, there was no work available for him and so he couldn't leave his home. He searched for years to find Marisa again and only found her once after that, but by the time this happened, she didn't know who he was. This film reflects change and possibly disliking change from the boyfriends point of view. I chose this film because it is very quirky and I haven't seen a film like it before, I like the peculiar way the shots are put together as they're the same shots but of different actors doing the same thing and then all edited together to reflect how she changes after each step and each actress resembles a different personality. I feel as though the film has a deeper meaning, as underneath it says, 'the distances we go to prevent the ones we love from changing'. I think the films shows us the boyfriends emotion in a visual way rather than the girlfriends forever changing personality, by this I mean that the different actresses representing his girlfriend are actually his way of not dealing with the fact that she may be changing in a different way, for example, growing away from him. Maybe this film is a visual representation showing us the boyfriends emotions towards the inevitable changes him and his partner are going through. The voiceover however makes us think differently as it sounds as though her boyfriend is genuinely concerned for his girlfriend and almost deceives us, this is very powerful as it allows to get inside her boyfriends head even though he is not present in most of the film, we get to see and understand his view point, allowing us to make our own interpretations of the film. The editing would have been very difficult as there is a lot of continuity throughout the whole clip, each individual actress had to do the same routine and the shots would have all had to have been put together at the right place and time. The use of many actresses gives a different and unique element to the film as it shows visual changes and so keeps the audience interested on what the next one is going to be. The actual shots are not very interesting as there is not much variety, instead they're kept simple and plain, this is done to show the boyfriend watching her, and also that it is a routine carried out everyday. It makes the film seem very realistic as it adds to us seeing from the boyfriends eyes.
